Your franchise head office may be bidding on your suburb
If you are an agent in a franchise network, your head office may already be running Google ads for the brand in your suburb. That is not a secret and it is not a problem, but it changes how you should think about your own campaign. This article explains how the Google auction treats a brand ad and your ad, what each one is good at, and how to advertise under your own name without working against your own network.
How the auction treats the brand ad and your ad
Google runs one auction per search. If the brand's ad and your ad are both eligible for the same search, both enter it, and Google ranks them by Ad Rank: bid, ad quality and context (Google Ads Help). Four things follow.
- You are not shut out. Google does not reserve a search for the franchisor. Your ad competes for the same searches the brand ad does, in the same way an independent agency across the road would.
- One ad per site in each spot. Google does not allow more than one ad for the same business or website in a single ad location. If your profile page sits on your network's website, Google may treat your ad and the brand's ad as ads for the same site, so they will not both appear in the same spot at once. Which one shows is decided in the auction.
- The click goes where the vendor chooses. If the vendor clicks the brand ad, the enquiry enters the network's own system and is handled by its rules. If the vendor clicks your ad, they land on your profile or ring your phone.
- Exclusivity does not change this. XLR8 Media's one agent per suburb is a promise about our own clients. It cannot stop a franchisor, a portal or another agency entering the auction. What a well-run campaign does is win the auction often: in 2025 our clients' ads held the number one position on Google 55.18 percent of the time on average across all our client campaigns.
What the brand campaign is good at
None of this is an argument against the network campaign. A brand campaign keeps the network visible in suburbs where no individual agent is advertising.
Advertise alongside the brand, not against it
Agents who do this well treat the brand campaign as background and build their own campaign around what the brand cannot say: their name, their suburb and their phone number.
- Make the ad about you. The brand ad talks about the network. Yours names you and your suburb, and tells the vendor they will speak to you.
- Send the click to your own page. Your agent profile is the page that sells you. XLR8 Media points every ad at the agent's existing profile page, and the call button in the ad rings the agent directly.
- Know which calls came from your ads. XLR8 Media tracks the calls made from the ad's call button and emails them to you the next business day, so you can see what your own campaign produced.
Check your franchise agreement for any rules on individual advertising before you start.
Questions to ask before you start
- Does my network run search ads in my suburb?
- Where do enquiries from the network campaign go, and how are they allocated?
- Will my agency run campaigns for any other agent in my suburb? (Ask any agency this, including us: our answer is no.)
Your own campaign and your network's brand campaign can run side by side. If you want your own name in front of vendors searching in your suburb, start with the suburb availability check.
